Dance Connects – A Visit to Riem

A special outreach project in collaboration with the Rotary Club München Hofgarten recently brought the dancers of the Bavarian Junior Ballet Munich to the Lehrer-Wirth School in the Munich district of Riem. There, the ensemble gave two one-hour performances for students in the 3rd/4th and 5th/6th grade levels.

The Lehrer-Wirth School is characterized by a particularly diverse student body: around 85% of the children are of non-German origin. So what could contribute more to promoting integration than the shared experience of the universal language of dance?

In the school’s architecturally impressive gymnasium, the dancers gave the children fascinating insights into their daily routines—from morning warm-up exercises at the ballet barre with training and rehearsal director Prof. Olivier Vercoutère to a brief historical overview of classical ballet presented by artistic director Ivan Liška. The students watched with excitement and curiosity as two short ballets from the company’s current repertoire were performed.

The aim of this initiative was not only to make a cultural offering accessible, but also to build bridges—between generations, cultures, and art forms. This dance experience, shared by a total of around 160 students, was designed to bring them into direct contact with the performance, beauty, and expressive power of dance. The morning clearly demonstrated that the art of ballet knows no language barriers—and that it can be for everyone.

The feedback from the school was full of enthusiasm! …a continuation has already been agreed upon for next year.
