Bayerisches Junior Ballett München at the Prinzregententheater is more than a performance series: it is an invitation to support, experience, and believe in the future of dance. Here, audiences encounter artists at a decisive moment – when talent meets opportunity, and potential begins to crystallize into individuality. To attend is to share in the journey of these young dancers as they shape their voices, refine their artistry, and step confidently onto the international stage.
After two resoundingly successful, sold-out seasons, Bayerisches Junior Ballett München at the Prinzregententheater returns – now firmly established as an annual highlight in Munich’s dance calendar. Beyond the cult-status Bosl-Matinees, this series offers audiences a rare and privileged opportunity: to witness the artistic evolution of the Bayerisches Junior Ballett München in real time, as these exceptional young dancers perform key works from their acclaimed repertoire and take decisive steps toward their professional futures.
At the heart of this season’s program is the long-awaited return of Jiří Kylián’s neoclassical masterpiece «Songs of a Wayfarer», back in Munich after an absence of three years. Created in 1982, Kylián’s ballet recalls the choreographer’s early neoclassical language, yet it also marks a pivotal moment in his artistic life. The work was born shortly after Kylián’s first return to Prague after fleeing his homeland in the spring of 1968, and it carries the emotional weight of that homecoming. Oscillating between overwhelming sorrow and radiant joy, «Songs of a Wayfarer» reveals Kylián’s legendary musicality: Mahler’s nostalgia and ache are mirrored in soft, flowing phrases, interrupted by sharply etched, gestural staccatos. Expansive lifts allow the dancers’ bodies to float through space with breathtaking ease, creating images that linger long after the music fades.
Alongside this perennial favorite, the company revisits two powerful contemporary works that showcase the stylistic range and expressive courage of the next generation. Jorma Elo’s «Slice to Sharp» – praised internationally for its razor-sharp musical precision, athletic drive, and exhilarating complexity – returns as a thrilling display of speed, clarity, and ensemble virtuosity. Its relentless energy and playful unpredictability continue to challenge and ignite dancers and audiences alike.
Completing the program is Marco Goecke’s «Devil’s Kitchen», created in 2025 to celebrate the Bayerisches Junior Ballett München’s 15th anniversary. Described by critics as intensely physical, deeply human, and marked by Goecke’s unmistakable choreographic signature, the work demands total commitment from its performers. With its nervous intensity, raw emotional undercurrents, and moments of unexpected tenderness, «Devil’s Kitchen» becomes a powerful vehicle for young dancers on the brink of their professional careers—inviting audiences to witness not only performance, but transformation.
